• About Us

I'm a vegetarian eating my way through Houston's restaurant scene and doing a lot of home cooking along the way. I was raised vegetarian and have stuck with it these past 33 years. I love animals, but wouldn't call myself an animal rights activist. I love vegan cooking, but am not vegan. I don't like fake meat, so you won't see many recipes here that call for it. I live with an omnivore who thankfully enjoys vegetarian cooking as much as I do. We know vegetarian food can be delicious and easy to make. So, as we navigate our kitchen and the local dining scene, we will rate recipes and restaurants with a carrot system. Five carrots means it's amazing and no carrots means it sucked. A restaurant will recieve no carrots if they don't have a vegetarian main dish, which is sadly something I encounter often. Join us on our journey by offering recomendations and recipe ideas. We'd love to hear from you.

Sunday Challenge: Raise The Roof Sweet Potato Lasagna

The Background: I love that Austin firefighters created this vegan lasagna recipe. My omnivore found it online and suggested we make it for our Sunday challenge. Here’s the reicpe. I thought it sounded kind of gross. Sweet potatoes, veggies, tofu and cashews??? No thanks. How could a lasagna possibly be good without cheese? But firefighter [...]

No Room For Vegetarians At Zelko Bistro’s Table

We just got back from dinner at the hot, new Zelko Bistro in the Heights. I’ve been eyeing it for months, waiting and hoping they’d have at least one interesting meatless entree. I’ve gleaned everything I could from Greg Morago and other reviewers, but couldn’t find Zelko’s menu online and got an answering machine every [...]

Bombay Pizza Co. Blends The Best Of Both Worlds

You’ve tasted New York and Chicago-style pizza, now you have to try Bombay’s take on the Italian classic. We decided to check out Bombay Pizza Company after reading about it in this Houston Chronicle story. Our mission was to park our car Downtown, see a movie, have a few drinks at Warrens and walk to [...]

Sunday Challenge: Malaysian Tofu Rendang

The Background: We usually order yellow curry tofu when we venture out for Thai food, but we’ve never successfully made it at home. We saw this recipe for Malaysian Tofu Rendang, which called for star of anise, tamarind pulp and lemon grass, three ingredients we’ve never used before. It took a few trips to the [...]

Wanted: Mexican restaurants with vegetarian beans AND rice

A good friend and fellow vegetarian recommended Maria Selma on Richmond Avenue. We recently tried it. I was disappointed to learn upon ordering that Maria Selma is another in a long line of Houston Mexican restaurants that put chicken stock in their rice. I used to operate on a strict don’t ask, don’t tell policy [...]

Sunday Challenge: Artichoke Croquettes With Lentils

The Background: We love artichokes and our Café Flora cookbook. So, we decided to make this artichoke croquette with braised black lentils recipe. They’re served with salad greens heaped on top, so we figured that pretty much made a whole dinner. We skipped the cream sauce. The Preparation: This is another dinner that requires a [...]

Himalaya serves up the best Pakistani food in Houston

It seems crazy, but I think Himalaya just might be my favorite Houston restaurant. The food is spicy and wonderful. The flavors are deep and sophisticated. The garlic naan is perfect. I’ve been a dozen times, and I’ve never been disappointed. A few people have been turned off by the casual atmosphere and the server’s [...]

A Fruitless Search For Veggie Dogs at Minute Maid Park

UPDATE 5-6-10: Hey everyone, I found veggie dogs tonight at Minute Maid! They are located in section 125 at the Dining Car Grill. They have them listed on the menu board, so you should be able to find them. Thank you to everyone who searched the park, wrote in and offered support. And thank you [...]

The Sunday Challenge: Vegetarian Gumbo

The Background: We decided to do a little Cajun cooking for our Easter Sunday Challenge. I’ve never eaten gumbo of any kind, so I was excited when my omnivore found this recipe for veggie gumbo. He has eaten all kinds of gumbo, but he was eager to try it without the greasy sausage and seafood [...]

Where’s The Beef? Not In These Lentil Walnut Burgers

Gardenburgers are good in a pinch, but if you have a little extra time why not make lentil walnut burgers with a yogurt, cilantro sauce? Here’s the recipe. We made them Friday night with some oven baked fries and coleslaw. They were very yummy. We’ve tried them a few times in the past, and always [...]
