• About Us

I'm a vegetarian eating my way through Houston's restaurant scene and doing a lot of home cooking along the way. I was raised vegetarian and have stuck with it these past 33 years. I love animals, but wouldn't call myself an animal rights activist. I love vegan cooking, but am not vegan. I don't like fake meat, so you won't see many recipes here that call for it. I live with an omnivore who thankfully enjoys vegetarian cooking as much as I do. We know vegetarian food can be delicious and easy to make. So, as we navigate our kitchen and the local dining scene, we will rate recipes and restaurants with a carrot system. Five carrots means it's amazing and no carrots means it sucked. A restaurant will recieve no carrots if they don't have a vegetarian main dish, which is sadly something I encounter often. Join us on our journey by offering recomendations and recipe ideas. We'd love to hear from you.

Sweet Potato Stuffed Shells Make Perfect Sunday Supper

The omnivore was at it again. This time, he dreamed up a tasty pasta dish with jumbo shells and sweet potatoes. We had stuffed the biggy shells with butternut squash in the fall, but now that summer’s in full swing and fall veggies are out of season, he wanted a new twist. So he peeled [...]

Sunday Challenge: Artichoke Croquettes With Lentils

The Background: We love artichokes and our Café Flora cookbook. So, we decided to make this artichoke croquette with braised black lentils recipe. They’re served with salad greens heaped on top, so we figured that pretty much made a whole dinner. We skipped the cream sauce. The Preparation: This is another dinner that requires a [...]

Simple Food For Simple People: Garlic Spaghetti

Since our last pasta dish was kind of a dud we thought we’d share one of our weeknight pasta staples with you. We love this dish. It’s hard to mess up and always hits the spot. I first discovered it at a downtown Houston restaurant. I tried to create it at home a few times [...]

Three Bean Chili: Simple and Delicious

It was a rainy Monday and I was craving something warm and hardy for dinner. A steaming bowl of chili and cornbread sounded perfect. But I didn’t have a chili recipe and I couldn’t find one in any of my veggie cookbooks. Is chili too common for vegetarian chefs to put in cookbooks? So I [...]

Blue Fish Takes Pride in Veggie Sushi

There is only one kind of restaurant that really scares me: the seafood restaurant. I find there is really nothing I can eat at them. People go to seafood restaurants because they want to eat seafood. Even the salads have seafood in them. And unlike steakhouses, they rarely have baked potatoes and other sides I [...]

A Taste of Turkey (Not the Bird) at Istanbul Grill

One of my favorite Houston lunch spots is the Istanbul Grill in West University. All of their appetizers are vegetarian and they feature many veggie entrees. I had never tried their red lentil soup until recently when the waiter casually mentioned that it was vegetarian. I love it. I often stop by the Istanbul Grill [...]
