• About Us

I'm a vegetarian eating my way through Houston's restaurant scene and doing a lot of home cooking along the way. I was raised vegetarian and have stuck with it these past 33 years. I love animals, but wouldn't call myself an animal rights activist. I love vegan cooking, but am not vegan. I don't like fake meat, so you won't see many recipes here that call for it. I live with an omnivore who thankfully enjoys vegetarian cooking as much as I do. We know vegetarian food can be delicious and easy to make. So, as we navigate our kitchen and the local dining scene, we will rate recipes and restaurants with a carrot system. Five carrots means it's amazing and no carrots means it sucked. A restaurant will recieve no carrots if they don't have a vegetarian main dish, which is sadly something I encounter often. Join us on our journey by offering recomendations and recipe ideas. We'd love to hear from you.

Sweet Potato Stuffed Shells Make Perfect Sunday Supper

The omnivore was at it again. This time, he dreamed up a tasty pasta dish with jumbo shells and sweet potatoes. We had stuffed the biggy shells with butternut squash in the fall, but now that summer’s in full swing and fall veggies are out of season, he wanted a new twist. So he peeled [...]

Sunday Challenge: Raise The Roof Sweet Potato Lasagna

The Background: I love that Austin firefighters created this vegan lasagna recipe. My omnivore found it online and suggested we make it for our Sunday challenge. Here’s the reicpe. I thought it sounded kind of gross. Sweet potatoes, veggies, tofu and cashews??? No thanks. How could a lasagna possibly be good without cheese? But firefighter [...]

The Sunday Challenge: Vegetarian Gumbo

The Background: We decided to do a little Cajun cooking for our Easter Sunday Challenge. I’ve never eaten gumbo of any kind, so I was excited when my omnivore found this recipe for veggie gumbo. He has eaten all kinds of gumbo, but he was eager to try it without the greasy sausage and seafood [...]

Sunday Challenge: Mushroom Ravioli With Brown Butter

Ravioli: Two Carrots Bruschetta: Four Carrots Blue Cheese Dressing: Four Carrots The Background: Ravioli is usually a restaurant-only food. Before I cooked, which actually wasn’t that long ago, I would buy the pre-packaged kind from the refrigerated section of the grocery store. I’d boil them for a few minutes, open a jar of spaghetti sauce [...]

The Sunday Challenge: Mango Ginger Tofu

The Background: I have a love hate relationship with mangos. Sometimes I’ll get a chunk of one in a fruit salad or a smoothie and it tastes like heaven. Other times they’ve tasted a bit like vomit. But I couldn’t resist the beautiful mountain of mangos at Whole Foods on Saturday. We bought three and [...]
